Blinded by an IED, soldier finds renewal and a new goal

Goalball, the international sport for the blind, was invented to rehabilitate veterans blinded in WWII. Now, high caliber athletes and amateurs play this sport all over the world. In keeping with the sport’s original intent, Casimir Werda, a former machine gunner in Iraq, uses goalball to retrain his senses and to fuel his innate competitiveness. Shot for USA Today.
