Odanaku: Poeisis of a Nepali Family

Following one family, a mother and her six children, “Odanaku” is a poetic depiction of life in a remote, rural Nepali village. A Western woman’s poetry, born from her interpretation of what she observed and lived through in the village, carries the viewer into their intimate world. The film explores if and how humans empathize across starkly different backgrounds; the tension inherent in experiencing both the beautiful and the seemingly impossible in another’s life. Messengers: The Owls of Mescalero

Considered a messenger of bad news for some Native American tribes, called the reason for big economic loss for loggers in the Pacific Northwest in the ‘90s, and just a cute creature for most urbanites, the owl occupies a unique place in the landscape of human animal interactions. For Dr. Serra Hoagland, a wildlife biologist, these mysterious birds are harbingers for climate change and an indicator species for forest health. She’s studying the Mexican Spotted Owl population on the Mescalero Apache reservation in New Mexico, a land steeped in cultural significance and whose tribal forest management team uses alternative methods to protect their forests from wildfire -- the biggest threat to the owl and to the environment in the Southwest.
